The impact of "Loving your Neighbor"

Micah's community of churches cares for more than 700 neighbors in need each year. They often lack homes, support systems, and basic needs. Many survive on less than $2 a day. Yet, we live in a region of 350,000 people whose households bring home an average of $249 a day. And most of us spend more than $2 a day on a cup of coffee or an impulse-buy that we don't need.

For $2 a day, $14 a week, $60 a month, $180 a quarter, $365 every six months and $730 a year, here are some of the impacts you can have:

$14 a week : One and a half meals, A night of shelter from the cold, An ID card for renting an apartment or starting a new job, A prescription, A day of showers for anyone who needs one

$60 a month: A tent and a sleeping bag, A ride to and from work, A night in a motel for a family waiting for a shelter bed, A new pair of work boots, the cost of relocating donated furniture to a newly re-housed household

$180 a quarter: A bus ticket for someone with family/friends in another community, A medical exam that documents a person's disability, Essential household items to start up a new home

$365 every six months: A month of support for a person recently rehoused, One night of care for eight people who are sick or dying, A new mattress for someone moving into housing, An essential car repair

or $730 a year: A substantial contribution toward a rental deposit for someone moving out of homelessness, half the cost of bridging someone from unemployment to a stable job

To take the Love Your Neighbor Challenge, all you have to do is commit $2 a day for as many days as you can and start giving! Once you take the challenge, you can also add this frame to your Facebook profile picture to let others know you took the challenge and challenge them to take it with you.
